Staff AI Engineer
Factorial

Hello! Do you want to help us redefine how AI powers the future of Business Management software, not as an add-on, but as a core part of how people work, decide and grow? We're looking for Staff Engineers who want to lead that shift, people who: Think about AI as part of how they engineer, not a feature they add Get energy from shipping things and seeing them work in the real world Care more about what they build than what their title says Ready to be part of the challenge? About the team We're a team of 200+ Product Engineers building Business Management solution that actually works for the people using it. Our core stack is Ruby on Rails and React but the interesting work right now is what we're building on top of that: agentic workflows, LLM-integrated features, systems that behave probabilistically rather than deterministically. The Operations Domain sits at the core of Factorial. This is where we build the systems that thousands of companies rely on every day to run their business, and they need to be accurate, compliant, and solid. Our teams own some of the most business-critical workflows we have: How employee time is tracked, planned, and managed How the employee journey is modelled from onboarding to offboarding How companies represent their organizational structure How compensation and payroll data are calculated and trusted Our mission is to take operational complexity and turn it into something simpler: AI-powered experiences that help companies scale without losing sight of the humans behind the decisions. What are we looking for? You have solid depth in both backend and frontend software engineering You have worked with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP You have shipped real products to production, not just prototypes You understand APIs, cloud platforms, and system design well You are seen as leaders technically and culturally, and hold the bar high Your always push back on processes that don't serve the team, from hiring to deployment You drive adoption of new abstractions and make sure others can actually use them You've built real AI-powered systems or workflows, not just tinkered with them You've shipped things that made a measurable difference, whether at work or on the side You lead key technical decisions and create things others across the company build on You communicate clearly in English; Spanish is a plus. What You’ll Be Doing? Define how we build AI at scale: We're still figuring out what great AI engineering looks like at Factorial, and that's part of the job. You'll help shape how we design, build, evaluate, and run AI-native product experiences, making sure they're reliable, compliant, and actually useful to the business. Lead Spec-Driven Development for AI: One of the things we care deeply about is not shipping blind. You'll push for a culture where teams define what "good" looks like before they build: expected behaviours, constraints, edge cases, success criteria. Then use those specs to move fast without breaking things. Build reusable AI foundations We don't want a patchwork of one-off AI experiments. You'll work on shared capabilities and abstractions that other product domains can actually use, built to scale, secure, and easy to govern. Design and evolve AI Skills: You'll drive the creation of modular, reusable AI "skills", components that can automate real workflows and take safe, traceable actions inside Factorial's ecosystem, especially where finance is involved. Establish robust evaluation frameworks: Getting AI to production is one thing; keeping it trustworthy is another. You'll build evaluation systems both automated and human-in-the-loop, so teams have a real signal on quality, safety, and reliability. Shape Retrieval-Augmented Generation strategies: You'll define how we ground our AI systems in data we actually trust. That means balancing probabilistic models with deterministic sources of truth, and making sure the whole thing scales without cutting corners on compliance or accuracy. Design human-in-the-loop and agentic workflows: The best AI systems we can build are ones where humans stay in control of what matters. You'll architect workflows that combine LLMs, rules, and user oversight: enabling automation while keeping things transparent and auditable. Own systems end-to-end: From the first conversation about a problem to production rollout and long-term maintenance, you'll own it. Not just the fun parts. Stay deeply connected to customers: The best technical decisions come from understanding real problems. You'll engage directly with customers to get that context, and bring it back into how we build. Partner with Product, Design, and Leadership: AI can't live in an engineering silo. You'll work cross-functionally to make sure it's woven into the product, not grafted on top, and you'll have a real voice in roadmap decisions. Raise the bar across the company: Whether it's mentoring, hiring, or pushing for better practices, you'll leave the engineering culture better than you found it How We Work (Barcelona or Madrid Office) At Factorial, we believe the best products are built when people come together, in person to collaborate, challenge ideas, and move fast. That’s why our Engineering Teams follows an office-first, flexible approach. We work on-site several days a week, using that time to connect, align, and innovate as a team. However, we also understand the importance of focus and flexibility, so we support remote work when it makes sense - whether for deep work, personal needs, or just a change of scenery. This balance helps us stay agile, creative, and closely connected, while giving everyone the space to do their best work. At Factorial we don't evaluate you by years of experience but by your knowledge and skills. We use our Career Path with a rubric framework where we define what is expected for each experience level and skill. This framework allows you to know your current level and what you need to keep growing. We love transparency, so our Career Path includes the salaries for each level, which we share during the first interview to ensure alignment. Our Hiring Process Intro Call Chat with our Talent Partner about your journey and goals. Hiring Manager Interview Deep dive into your product mindset, teamwork, and problem-solving. Live Challenge A collaborative technical exercise based on real-life problems. Final Coffee Chat A relaxed conversation with our CTO & VP of Engineering to explore our vision, culture, and your growth. The whole process is remote, using videoconferencing tools! About Factorial At Factorial, we’re building the leading AI Business Management Software for companies of all sizes. Our platform centralizes key workflows across HR, Finance, Talent, Operations, and IT, freeing teams from manual processes so they can focus on what really matters: leading, growing, and taking care of their people. With over 1,500 employees across Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. Staff ML Engineer
Factorial
1 - 2 Años
€ No Revelado
Barcelona

DataOps / ML & AI: What's the mission? Factorial is building a world-class data and AI platform to help teams make smarter decisions, automate complex workflows, and deliver more value to our customers. As a Staff ML Engineer, you'll set the technical direction for how we design, build, and ship AI-powered systems across Factorial. You'll own our most ambitious AI initiatives end-to-end—LLM applications, agents, and assistants—and make them accurate, reliable, explainable, and production-ready at scale. You'll be a force multiplier: raising the engineering bar, mentoring other engineers, and partnering with Product, Engineering, Data, Operations, Sales, and Customer Experience to turn the biggest business opportunities into robust AI solutions—balancing speed, impact, correctness, and long-term maintainability. The role You'll be part of the Data Ops – ML & AI team, working within a fast-growing Engineering and Data organization that builds high-impact systems across Factorial. You will identify, design, build, and deploy AI solutions across the full lifecycle: from problem framing and prototyping to development, productionization, evaluation, monitoring, and continuous improvement—and you'll define the patterns and standards the rest of the team builds on. A key part of the role is supporting our Data Scientists and Analytics team across the ML lifecycle—helping them take models and experiments from notebook to production, providing the tooling, pipelines, and best practices they need, and acting as the technical partner who turns their work into reliable, maintainable systems. You'll spend most of your time building with LLMs and modern AI frameworks—designing RAG pipelines, tool-using agents, and assistants with LangChain and the surrounding ecosystem. You'll be expected to understand when an LLM-based approach is the right tool—and when a simpler, more deterministic solution is better. You'll partner with stakeholders across the company to understand their needs, define success metrics, communicate trade-offs clearly, and ensure the solutions we build are useful, adopted, and measurable. You'll take ownership of projects from inception to production, working autonomously while leading cross-functional efforts alongside Data Engineers, Software Engineers, Product Managers, and business teams—and you'll help others do the same through technical mentorship and design reviews. Our stack & the day-to-day We predominantly use Python, SQL, and modern AI tooling to build, evaluate, and deploy AI solutions. You'll write production-grade Python and work extensively with LangChain and the LLM ecosystem—building RAG systems, agents, orchestration, prompting strategies, and evaluation harnesses. You'll turn business questions into AI capabilities: defining the right interfaces, retrieval strategies, prompts, tools, and guardrails, and validating them against clear, measurable outcomes. You'll develop LLM-powered applications and AI products, ensuring they are well-tested, observable, cost-aware, safe, and aligned with business needs. You'll collaborate with Engineering and Data teams to bring AI systems into production, defining clear interfaces, reliable pipelines, monitoring, and feedback loops—and establishing the architecture and best practices others reuse. On the ML lifecycle side, you'll act as the engineering backbone for our Data Scientists and Analytics team—pairing with them to productionize their models, building the shared pipelines, frameworks, and monitoring they rely on, and reviewing their work to ensure it's reliable, observable, and maintainable in production. You'll implement evaluation and monitoring practices to detect quality regressions, hallucinations, latency or cost issues, and changes in user or business behavior. You'll write documentation, share findings, join and lead technical conversations, and communicate insights clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You'll iterate in short development cycles, testing assumptions quickly, learning from results, and improving solutions based on real-world impact. Your first steps at Factorial Read a lot: Get to know Factorial's product, customers, data ecosystem, and current ML & AI initiatives. Learn a lot: Pair with team members from Data, Product, Engineering, and business teams to understand the main opportunities and challenges where AI can create value. Analyze a lot: Explore use cases, validate assumptions, prototype quickly, and help define clear success metrics and technical direction for our most impactful AI projects. Build a lot: Lead and contribute to high-impact AI workflows—LLM applications, agents, retrieval, evaluation, and stakeholder-facing solutions. Fail a lot: We encourage experimentation. We understand that trying out new ideas, failing, learning, and improving is part of the role. Talk a lot: Participate in and lead team rituals and stakeholder sessions to ensure what we build solves real business needs and can be adopted effectively. What we'd love to see in your background A degree in Computer Science or a closely related technical field. 5+ years of experience as a Machine Learning Engineer, Software Engineer, or similar role, with a strong track record of taking AI or data-intensive systems to production. Strong software engineering fundamentals and excellent Python development skills—you write clean, tested, maintainable production code. Hands-on experience building LLM-powered applications with LangChain (or equivalent frameworks)—RAG, agents, tool use, prompting, and evaluation. Deep experience across the full lifecycle of AI/ML systems: from problem definition and prototyping to deployment, evaluation, monitoring, and iteration. Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate ambiguous business questions into structured, measurable problems. Solid experience with SQL and familiarity with the modern AI/LLM ecosystem. Experience with production-oriented workflows, including evaluation, testing, monitoring, documentation, and collaboration with Engineering teams. A demonstrated ability to influence technical direction, set standards, and mentor other engineers. Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences. A strong ownership mindset, autonomy, curiosity, and the ability to navigate ambiguity. Comfortable working in English and with distributed teams. Willingness to work from our Barcelona office 4 days per week, with 1 day working from home. Strong plus: Experience deploying and scaling LLM systems in production (latency, cost, reliability, safety). Experience with LLMOps and MLOps practices and tools (orchestration, evaluation, observability, vector databases). Experience with retrieval systems, embeddings, and prompt/agent evaluation. Experience working in SaaS, B2B products, HRTech, fintech, or business management software. Experience leading cross-functional initiatives with Product and Engineering teams. How We Work We follow an office-first, flexible approach because we believe the best products are built when people collaborate face-to-face. For this role, we're looking for someone who can work from our Barcelona office 4 days per week, with 1 day working from home. This helps the team connect, brainstorm, align with stakeholders, and ship together, while keeping flexibility for deep work and personal balance. Perks of being part of our team We care about people and we also offer a lot of benefits for employees: High growth, multicultural and friendly environment Continuous training and learning based on your needs Alan private health insurance Healthy life with Wellhub (Gyms, pools, outdoor classes) Save expenses with Cobee Language classes with Preply Get the most out of your salary with Payflow And when at the office... Breakfast in the office and organic fruit Nora and other discounts Pet Friendly Join Factorial, where people grow Diversity is part of our culture, we have more than 43 nationalities in our teams and we are infused in an inclusive environment for all employees and candidates.
